Aqualia Colombia and the environmental authorities of Atlántico, Magdalena and La Guajira have signed a joint cooperation agenda to promote initiatives relating to environmental conservation and restoration, efficient water use, adaptation to climate change, legal and environmental training, and territorial strengthening.  An agreement signed by Angélica María Arbeláez, director of Aqualia Colombia; Jesús León Insignares, director of the CRA; Alfredo Rafael Martínez, director of Corpamag; and Samuel Santander, director of Corpoguajira. The partnership reinforces Aqualia’s commitment to sustainability and preventive water management, consolidating the company’s role as a strategic partner in anticipating risks, protecting water resources and promoting sustainable solutions in the Colombian Caribbean.

Caltaqua, Aqualia’s Italian subsidiary in the Sicilian province of Caltanissetta, has taken a further step towards the digitalisation of the water supply network with the introduction of state-of-the-art acoustic correlation sensors to detect hidden leaks with great precision. Following specialised training for its technical team, the first night-time monitoring campaign has already enabled the detection of an underground leak, facilitating faster repairs, reducing the need for excavation and optimising water management. This innovation reinforces Caltaqua’s commitment to operational efficiency and the sustainable use of water resources.

Aqualia took part in the 2nd Photorefineries Conference, held in Novi Sad (Serbia), an international event organised by the PurpleGain network, which brings together more than 350 members from 41 countries to promote innovative solutions based on solar energy and resource recovery. During the conference, Víctor Monsalvo, Director of Innovation, shared the company’s experience in the design, construction and operation of microalgae-based systems at the facilities in Chiclana de la Frontera, Almería, Mérida and Hellín (Spain), as well as the progress made at the Linares and Badajoz wastewater treatment works, where Aqualia operates systems that are unique in the world, capable of carrying out 100% solar-powered treatment without the addition of oxygen, thanks to the Anphora technology, patented by the company.

Badajoz (Extremadura) has become one of Spain’s pioneering cities in sustainable water management after obtaining triple certification from AENOR for the water footprint, the water footprint and the environmental footprint of its integrated water cycle. This recognition, promoted by the City Council and Aqualia, provides a comprehensive overview of the service’s environmental impact and helps to identify measures to make it more efficient.& The certification thus reinforces the city’s commitment to innovation, transparency and continuous improvement, to continue moving towards an increasingly sustainable management of resources.

The Czech town of Písečná now has a new water reservoir that enhances the security and capacity of the water supply to keep pace with the town’s growth. The infrastructure, built by SmVaK Ostrava at a cost of nearly 30 million Czech koruna (around 1.24 million euros), replaces a tank that had reached the end of its service life and increases its capacity almost fourfold, from 40 to 150 m³. As well as ensuring a more reliable supply during periods of drought or exceptional circumstances, the facility incorporates telemetry and remote control systems, as well as innovative ventilation and humidity control solutions developed in collaboration with the Brno University of Technology to extend the infrastructure’s service life.

The preventative closure of beaches following episodes of heavy rain is a situation with which our colleagues in the Spanish coastal services are all too familiar. Behind these measures lie infrastructure and protective mechanisms, designed to prevent flooding and more serious damage when rainfall exceeds the usual capacity of the drainage networks. In this article, using the example of Barbate (Cádiz, Andalusia), we explain how spillways work and the role they play in protecting the population and ensuring the safety of the facilities.

Aguas y Servicios de Costa Tropical (Granada, Spain), a company in which Aqualia holds a stake, is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a travelling exhibition that showcases its own staff.  The exhibition, which is touring the municipalities in the region, has been designed and built by the company’s teams using recycled materials sourced from the service’s day-to-day operations, transformed into panels that illustrate the evolution of the integrated water cycle on the Costa Tropical. The exhibition traces three decades of investment, innovation and service improvements, but also shines a spotlight on those who have made this evolution possible: the people who, generation after generation, have contributed their knowledge, experience and dedication. A collective tribute to the work of generations of professionals and to a shared history of 30 years in the service of water.
